Bay Foundation Educational Documentary

editing - producing - STEM

A few months after producing two PSAs about the California Drought with Xlantic, The Bay Foundation and LADWP came to us with a new project: an educational video about the same subject, this time specifically for students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

This was gratifying and exciting, because it was a validation of our previous work and a chance to extend it. While the PSAs were essentially 30-second bits, this would be an entire piece, full of opportunities to teach and go deep.

I learned a lot from some production stumbles made during the previous projects, and this was a very smooth experience, despite a time crunch. Director Ryan Maples had a clear idea of what he wanted to do. I had a hundred wild ideas as is my habit, from which he set a course for a straightforward but effective narrative. We hired a great young actress, Kenya, to be an on-camera host taking us through various explainers, location visits, and interviews.

Motion graphics from I did production sound, editing, motion graphics, broll capture, and script refinement on this one, all while working full time as an editor at moviepilot. It was a productive, if occasionally stressful and sleep deprived, time!

I love anything that dives into science, and where I get to pore over NASA or NOAA footage as part of the build. There’s endless amazing stuff out there.
